Overview

The Institute for Legal and Political Design, Graduate Schools for Law and Politics, The University of Tokyo (ILPD) was established in April 2025 by restructuring the Institute of Business Law and Comparative Law & Politics (IBC, established in 2006).

There are no "departments" or "laboratories" in the Graduate Schools for Law and Politics, and each faculty member independently and freely has conducted research, education, and social activities. This flexible structure has produced many results that contribute to "designate" law and politics to keep our society fair. However, nowadays, with increasing social issues such as DX and GX, and changes in the international situation, the activities of the faculty members are also diversifying. The role of ILPD is to enhance synergy of the diverse activities of the faculty members and contribute to deepen jurisprudence and political science, as well as to expand social collaboration, interdisciplinary collaboration, and international collaboration. ILPD will enable the faculty members and the staff supporting research and education to cooperate effectively, serve as a gateway for collaboration with various external parties, and work as a platform for the sustainable development of the activities of the Graduate Schools for Law and Politics.

ILPD is currently organized into the Business Law Center (BLC) and the International Center for Comparative Law and Politics (ICCLP).

BLC conducts theoretical and practical research on general business law as well as comprehensive research on the education methods necessary for the training of legal practitioners.

ICCLP promotes international research and education in law and political science. In addition, it has taken over the work of the former Center for Foreign Law Materials. The materials held by the latter Center have been reorganized as the "Room for Foreign Statutes and Cases" , which is a division of the Faculty of Law Library (access the library website here).

ILPD is now going to establish new two centers, Interdisciplinary Center(IDC)and Center for Legal and Political Education(CLPE). ILPD will continue its efforts to fulfill its goals;
-pursue cutting-edge research in collaboration with outstanding researchers and practitioners from Japan and overseas
-bring the research outcomes back to legal and political practice by holding public seminars, providing information
-develop human resources who will lead the next generation.
